Tempest 1.5: Excel integration; New dispense designer; and more

The 1.5 release of the Tempest control software includes the following updates and changes:

Pressure and Vacuum error notification. The Tempest can now notify you if a pressure or vacuum error occurs and provides a detailed description of the error.

Single input priming. You can now run single input priming to prime out the nozzles either using the tube or pipette tip source.

Check .NET 3.5 SP1. The Tempest automatically checks .NET 3.5 SP1 on your computer during the installation process. If you haven’t installed it yet, the Tempest will automatically display options that allow you to find and install the .NET 3.5 SP1 either from direct download or local disk/network.


Advanced Move sequence items. Double-click on move item (M) in the sequence panel to modify the sequence item movement. There are two movement types: Absolute and Relative.

  • Absolute: Sets the stage coordinates movement value, and this will be executed directly.
  • Relative: Sets the stage coordinates movement value, this will accumulate the Absolute value. E.g. If “m1” = X5 Y5 Z5 and “m2” (Using Relative value) = X6 Y6 Z6, the result will be X11 Y11 Z11.

Advanced move sequence items

Excel integration. The Tempest now supports an Excel format (*.dl.xls and *.dl.xlsx) for dispense list files. The Tempest also provides a feature for editing a dispense list using the Excel editor (both Excel and Open Office are supported). Right-click on any reagent in the dispense list and choose “Edit with Excel editor”.

Reagent recovery. The reagent recovery allows you to quickly recover liquid from the input(s) to bottle(s).

  • Click on the button to recover liquid from all inputs to bottles.
  • Click on the button to recover liquid from any selected input(s) to bottle(s).

Experiment designer. The experiment designer allows you to easily create a dispense list and set dispense volume to a specific well by clicking and holding on the desired wells on the plate view. The following are several types of volume which can be modified using the experiment designer (Advanced mode): Constant, Gradient Horizontal, Gradient Vertical, Gradient Diagonal, and Backfill Volume.

Delete reagent(s) using the 'Delete' key. You can now quickly delete reagents in the dispense list using the Delete key on the computer keyboard.

Open and modify a dispense list item. You can now open and modify a dispense list item by double-clicking it.

Multiple inputs selection. You can now select multiple inputs using the Ctrl and Shift keys on the computer keyboard. To do so, simply press and hold the CTRL or SHIFT key while selecting the desired inputs.

Priority index. The Priority Index column has been added to help you identify the reagents dispensing priority order. Right-click on the desired reagent and select Move To Priority to set the dispensing order.

Plate Load Position and Plate Unload Position. The Plate load position and Plate unload position menus allow you to set the load and unload plate positions before starting dispensing process. The default positions are: Stage port 1=left, Stage port 2=Right. To access the menus, go to File > Options > Dispense and select either Plate load definition or Plate unload definition. Advanced users can also modify each position by clicking the Show advanced options in the lower left of the Options dialog and typing each position coordinate numbers in the corresponding field.

Input Stock Recycle Timeout Minutes. The InputStockRecycleTimeoutMinutes allows you to set specific prime cycle time for the system to remove any possible bubble. To do so, go to File > Options > Show advanced options > Device > InputStockRecycletimeoutMinutes. If you set this field to 1, the system will prime every 1 minute. Please make sure that all sources are tubes and they have been primed.

Input source options. The input source provides two reagent source options: the Tube and Pipette Tip.

Wash configuration. The WashVolume and WashStationPosition configurations are now available in the File > Options > Show advanced options > Device. The WashVolume allows you to set the total wash volume for each input column and the WashStationPosition allows you to set the wash position by typing a new value in each corresponding field.
